First Reconciliation (also called First Penance or Confession) is an important step in a child’s preparation for receiving the Eucharist. In this sacrament, children learn about God’s mercy and experience the joy of forgiveness through the healing grace of Jesus Christ. During preparation, children are taught how to examine their conscience, express sorrow for their sins, and receive God’s forgiveness through the priest. First Reconciliation is typically celebrated during second grade as part of parish sacramental preparation, before receiving First Holy Communion. As with First Eucharist preparation, children attending Catholic schools also participate in the parish sacramental program, and older children who may have missed receiving the sacrament are always welcome to prepare at the parish.
